Where and what to see at Ephesus and Selçuk?
Selçuk is located 18 kilometers northeast of Kuşadası, 3 kilometers northeast of Ephesus, and 7 kilometers from the House of the Virgin Mary, Meryem Ana.
The town is home to a number of 14th-century mosques, the remains of a Roman aqueduct, and a few Ottoman houses. Nearby is the hill of Ayasoluk, on which are the ruins of the Basilica of St. John, built over the tomb of the Apostle John. Higher up is a citadel with the ruins of, among other things, a mosque. At the foot of the hill is the Isa Bey Mosque from the 14th century, with the Isa Bey Hammam next to it, the remains of the Temple of Artemis.
Also, 8 kilometers east of Selçuk is the village of Sirince, which was mainly inhabited by Christian Greeks until the population exchange of 1924. Today, there are a few abandoned churches in the village, which is said to be the site of Mary’s ascension. In recent years, the village has been visited by tourists.
